Birth, Deaths & Marriage Resouces
Access to BDM's varies considerably in each State. Not all states have indexes online.
Included are websites of transcription services where availalbe. Where not availabe, website of the District Registrar is made availabe, to enable official copy of certificate to be ordered - these can be expensive, and you may have to prove relationship to the person to access due to privacy issues.
No certificates are availabe to view online.

New South Wales
Here you can search the Historical Indexes of NSW.
Births 1788 - 1907
Deaths 1788 - 1977
Marriages 1788 - 1957
Fill in the Surname, and make sure you complete the 'years to be searched' box or the search will fail. Click 'search now'. Results will appear. You can change the results to sort by order of District, Father, Mother by clicking on the headings at the top of the grid. To view futher pages of results click on the numbers at the bottom of the page. You can purchase an official copy of the certificates by clicking on the 'Buy Now' button. To view the marriages at the top of the page is a button 'Go to Marriages'. When in the marriages a similar button appears to return to the Births and Deaths.
A cheaper alternative is a Transcpription Service provided by Joy Murrin. A full transcription is $15.00

Victoria
You can search the historical indexes and you will be advised how many matching records have been found over how many pages. Each index result page will have up to 20 records. To view the first of these pages you will be asked to enter credit card details. You will be charged AUD$0.99 (including GST) for each page you choose to view. You will be provided with a Receipt Number which you should note in case you need to quote it in the future. If you leave this site unexpectedly because your internet connection fails, you will be charged only for the number of index result pages you have viewed.
This service allows you to search Victorian indexes of:
Births 1853 to 1907
Marriages 1853 to 1942
Deaths 1853 to 1985
Church baptisms, marriages and burials 1836 to 1853 - these are full records but they contain limited information.
Following your search, a summary results page will be displayed, showing the number of matching records and the number of separate pages it will take to view these results. You can refine your search if necessary. When you locate the index entry you are seeking, you will be offered the option of: downloading an uncertified image of the original register entry for a fee of AUD$17.50, or, applying online for a certified certificate of the original register entry for a fee of AUD$25.80.
An uncertified image can be downloaded to your printer or computer whereas a certified certificate will be posted to you.

South Australia
South Australian Indexes are available online - limited information only of year and name.
Births 1842 - 1928

Did you know that the South Australian BDM disks will not run on a 64bit operating system with Windows7 Home Premium?
(This is what most new computers now have).
You can overcome this problem by purchasing Windows7 Professional.
Windows 7 64bit using ‘Windows Virtual PC – XP Mode’
You need to download it from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx
Follow the instructions to install the above. Then start XP mode and install the BDM’s
The South Australian Genealogy & Heraldry Society also hold copies of all certificates available to the public. An annual membership fee, joining fee and hourly usage of equipment fee is applicable. A transcription service is available by mail.

Western Australia
Free online searching of Western Australian birth, death and marriage indexes is available for the following ranges of years:
Birth indexes - 1841 to 1932
Death indexes - 1841 to 1953
Marriage indexes - 1841 to 1923
Reverse Marriages New!! available at http://www.wamarriage.info/default.aspx to 1965
You can also purchase a certificate, using the "Order" option alongside the search result. This will pop up a new window with an order form (PDF).
Click on the 'select' box in the centre of the page to activate Births Deaths or Marriages search engine.

Tasmania
No Tasmanian Indexes are availabe online. Click on this link for further information as to how you can purchase them.
Some listings are available in the Tasmania Weekly Chronicle online from 1901 to 1935. You can view the actual birth, death and marriage notices. This is a pictorial section and some wedding photographs are also available but you will need to manually search each page, so if you know the month and the year this is a good option.
Queensland
To activate the search engine click on the 'free online search' button on the right hand side of the screen.
You can search the historical births, deaths and marriages indexes for all:
Births that occurred in Queensland between 1829 and 1914
Deaths that occurred in Queensland between 1829 and 1964
Marriages that occurred in Queensland between 1829 and 1934.
Enter the surname and make sure you enter the year range for the search engine to operate
If you require a search of years after these, it will be necessary for you to apply to the registry. For restricted records, you will need to complete the relevant birth, death or marriage certificate application form.
The Queensland Pioneers Index allows you to search for births, deaths and marriages registered in Queensland. This information can then be used to help you apply for copies of registrations.
The 1829–1889 index contains nearly 420,000 entries of births, deaths and marriages registered in Queensland. It is available on microfiche and CD.
Microfiche version
This version was released in 1997 and consolidates individual sets of indexes of births, deaths and marriages registered in Queensland before 1890. It has been compiled alphabetically in surname order, then by given names, event and date of event. The set includes 62 fiche.
CD version
Released in May 2000, the CD-ROM version contains the same data as the microfiche version but includes minor corrections made to the data since 1997.
This version has several fully-searchable fields, including surname, given names, event, date of event, father or spouse surname, mother or spouse given names, remarks and registration number. The retrieval software (Digger Version 2.3) is compatible with the Microsoft Windows, Macintosh and DOS operating systems.

This index is available on microfiche (109 fiche in the set) and on CD-ROM. Northern Territory
No Online Indexes are avaiable for the Northern Territory. The link will take you to the Department of Justice for application on certificates.
Indexes are available for purchase on CD from Gould Genealogy.
Please note that the early deaths were registered in South Australia.
Adoption research available.
People who were legally adopted, or their natural parents, are now able to obtain information prevously kept private. All initial requests for Northern Territory adoption information must be forwarded to the Family and Children's Services Support Unit of the Northern Territory Health Services Department. The Registry will not enter into any correspondence from individuals seeking adoption information without prior verification from the Family and Children's Services Support Unit.
