Alphabetical Index to Central Register of Male Prisoners (VA 1464) Penal and Gaols Branch, Chief Secretary's Department, 1868 – 1947
This alphabetical index should be used to find registration numbers for male prisoners received into prisons in the Melbourne area between 1868 and 1947. Prisoners are listed alphabetically by the first letter of their surnames. Because of the overlapping chronological arrangement of each of the volumes listed above, you may need to consult more than one volume to locate the prisoner name for which you are searching.
With the exception of volume (or unit) 2, the alphabetical listings include the registration
number, prisoner name, and the volume and page number of the register in which their details can be found. Volume 2 lists only the registration number and prisoner name. To obtain further prisoner information, take note of registration, volume and page numbers (if available) to order the required volume (unit) of VPRS 515/P0 Central Register of Male Prisoners through the website for viewing in the Victorian Archives Centre Reading Room.
Alphabetical Index to Central Register of Female Prisoners (VA 1464) Penal and Gaols Branch, Chief Secretary's Department, 1857 – 1948
This alphabetical index should be used to find registration numbers for female prisoners
received into custody at Victorian prisons between 1857 and 1948. Prisoners are listed
alphabetically by the first letter of their surnames. Because of the overlapping chronological arrangement of the two volumes listed above, you may need to consult both to locate the prisoner name for which you are searching.
The alphabetical listings include the registration number, prisoner name, and the volume and page number of the register in which their details can be found. To obtain further prisoner information, take note of the registration, volume and page numbers to view the appropriate sheet of the microfiche copy of the register VPRS 516/P1 Central Register of Female Prisoners in PROV reading rooms
Alphabetical Lists of Patients in Asylums (VA 2863) Hospitals for the Insane Branch
Details recorded for each patient in most of the volumes include their full name, nationality, last known address, relative's address, discharge details (including death). Volumes 7 and 8 only include information about where patients were transferred from and their discharge details. These records can provide dates of admission to allow researchers to locate patient records in the case books for each of the asylums (except for Cremorne) corresponding to the volumes in the present series.
